Apuleius (c. 125 - c. 180) was a Latin prose writer. A Numidian Berber from Madaurus (now
M'Daourouch, Algeria). Apuleius studied Platonist philosophy in Athens; traveled to Italy, Asia
Minor and Egypt; and was an initiate in several cults or mysteries. The most famous incident in
his life was when he was accused of using magic to gain the attentions (and fortune) of a wealthy
widow. He declaimed and then distributed a witty tour de force in his own defense before the
proconsul and a court of magistrates convened in Sabratha, near Tripoli. This is known as the
Apologia. His most famous work is his bawdy picaresque novel, the Metamorphoses, otherwise
known as The Golden Ass. It is the only Latin novel that has survived in its entirety. It relates the
ludicrous adventures of one Lucius, who experiments with magic and is accidentally turned into
a donkey. "An Apuleius Reader: Selections from the Metamorphoses" by Ellen D. Finkelpearl

comprised of selections of the writings of Apuleius (including 660 unadapted lines from

Draft Resistance is a thoughtful, evenhanded look at the organized resistance to President
Lincoln's policies during the Civil War, especially the Union draft, in Pennsylvania's Columbia
County. Democratic newspaper editors often called for active resistance to the draft, and
occasionally antiwar feelings fueled violent incidents. In July of 1864, a Union lieutenant
confronting draft evaders was shot; this prompted a military intervention in the northern
townships, and the arrest of more than one hundred men. Ill feelings and bitter fallout over the
Union's alleged use of power persisted through the Reconstruction. "The title, 'Fishing Creek
Confederacy' was the derogatory term used by Republicans to describe organized draft resistance
in Columbia County... the Copperheads of the county did not have pro-Southern sympathies.
Rather, they were antiwar Democrats who thought that President Lincoln had gone too far with
his assault on civil liberties in the war to preserve the Union. They believed that abolitionists had
subverted the war effort and turned it into a crusade against slavery, which was protected by the
Constitution... Slavery was legal, they argued, and furthermore, blacks were inferior and were not
even citizens. They would not fight to free slaves and they wanted a compromised end to the
conflict." The Fishing Creek Confederacy is a seminal work of historical study on an
oft-overlooked aspect of the Civil War, and enthusiastically recommended especially for public

The Seminole are a Native Americans in the United States people originally of Florida, who now
reside primarily there and in Oklahoma. The Seminole nation emerged in a process of
ethnogenesis out of groups of Native Americans, most significantly Creek from what is now
Georgia and Alabama, who settled in Florida in the early 18th century. The word Seminole is a
corruption of cimarron, a Spanish term for "runaway" or "wild one", historically used for certain
Native American groups in Florida. The Indians who constituted the nucleus of this Florida
group thought of themselves as yat'siminoli or "free people," because for centuries their ancestors
had resisted the attempts of the Spaniards to conquer and convert them, as well as the attempts of
the English to take their lands and use them as military pawns. "The Complete Seminole" by

Arapaho oratorical tradition, I should also declare that I am sure that I have made some errors in

writer, diplomat, and politician primarily in Liberia. He also taught for five years in Sierra Leone,
